Flooding report withheld by city and Region gets made public by Councillor Sharman: huzzahs to him

BURLINGTON, ON

Sooner or later what they don’t want you to know comes to the surface.

Paul Sharman sent data out to some of the people in his ward ( we aren’t sure if everyone got it – if it was a newsletter – we didn’t get it)

A constituent made mention of the data and we asked where it came from.

Here is what Sharman made available:

Sharman performs an important public service.

What would appear to be clear from the data made available and the Sharman comments is that if sump pumps and back water valves are installed and the creeks are inspected regularly with everyone being vigilant in this endeavour much of what the people in the city are going through can be eliminated next time – and there will be a next time.

Why the Region and the City have been sitting on this data is a little clearer – we didn’t fully learn the lessons form the 2014 flood

Absolutely we did not learn the lesson from the 2014 flood, but our council, legal and new CAO will never admit it and that is why provincial intervention as per a 1988 Cabinet Direction is imperative. Our strong Mayor and her “team” must be held accountable and corrective action taken as per the directive. Too many examples of what should not have occurred and are still occurring are on our city governance records and the Minister and Premier failing to act in accordance with the Directive, put in place to protect the taxpayer is no longer acceptable.

Every homeowner should without question have a back water valve installed in their sewer connection. The cost is minimal. The protection is invaluable. Do

I also suggest every homeowner look at their insurance policy or consult with their insurance broker to be sure they have the correct flood insurance. I would guess most do not.

I’ve seen this map several times. It wasn’t withheld. It’s a Halton map bases on the location of calls.

Editor’s note: I beg to differ – we have been chasing the Regional people for the data for more than a week, we knew the report existed. We know of another Councillor who had a copy of the report – but wouldn’t release it. We tried to get the report from the City communications people; they referred us to the Region
