Will fireworks take place?

A reader asked:

Some places have cancelled fireworks due to the wild fire smoky air everywhere.

Will there be any fireworks in Spencer Smith park by the lake this weekend? Thank you and Happy Canada Day!!

Good question:  We’ve reached out to Communications at city hall for some answers – they don’t get to their desks until 8:30 am  It’s 4:08 am at my desk.

Will the amount of smoke in the air be cause to cancel the fireworks on Canada Day?

If a decision is made to cancel fireworks due to the smoke in the air – who at City Hall will make that decision.

    I sure hope so but it seems our council thinks simply declaring a climate emergency is good enough. The usual empty gesture mantra.

    I sent an email to council on the May 24 long weekend, urging them (not for the first time) to stop fireworks, period. It was day four in a row of huge fireworks displays here in ward 2 and other parts of the city, by the public setting them off. They went on for hours. I included the following article on the negative impact of fireworks, urged them to read it, and asked for responses back, pointing out that they do keep touting their commitment to citizen engagement.

    I got a useless reply from an intern to the mayor essentially telling me about bylaws (which aren’t enforced) and suggesting I could call the police (!!!). We have a Deputy Mayor of the Environment who didn’t even bother replying to me. I did get a good response and a phone meeting with Lisa Kearns and am hoping she will try to make some progress. Difficult when the rest of council seems to not care. Nobody else bothered to respond.

    There are many cities in the world which have switched to more environmentally friendly fireworks – or cancelled them altogether, including Banff. Fireworks land in our lake and our parks. They are terrible for our health, harmful to wildlife, birds and pets. There are alternatives.
