BURLINGTON, ON
If you plan on picnicking in LaSalle Park or Hidden Valley Park, especially as part of a larger group, please take your garbage bags and packaging home with you. Containers in parks are for litter, not entire garbage bags or packaging from newly opened items. Unfortunately, the photos show what has become commonplace at the city’s picnic parks.
Ward 1 City Councillor Kelvin Galbraith points out that “City staff do not have the capacity to increase servicing of the parks and will not add additional cans because is just encourages more dumping.
“If you see an overflowing litter container, please report it to city@burlington.ca for servicing.”
Galbraith has made significant changes and upgrades to his ward newsletter – I think he is now working with a new administrative assistant.
And while we’re at it…..how about the Junk and garbage left at the Charity Bins…especially the one at the Food Basics plaza , just off Upper Middle. It’s discusting! We apparently have a group of lazy folks who feel entitled to deposit their junk and garbage there…kinda outta sight ….outta mind attitude.
The one question that has not been asked – When are these trash bins emptied? Once a day, once every 2 days, once a week – NEVER on the weekends.
Anyone interested in mapping out the logic path and decision tree that ends up with the conclusion that the result of adding more garbage receptacles is more garbage strewn across our park versus more garbage being put into the added receptacles? If the former is true then why not remove some on an experimental basis to see what happens. More dumping or less dumping?
This what it reads on the City of Burlington Website. “To keep the picnic sites and parks clean, use the trash bins provided. Please bring garbage bags to collect your waste in case park bins are full”
Signs should be posted, and website updated. The trails within the park itself are just under 2 kms and they run close to the creek. The area is wild and natural. It a shame when you see this, as the park officials work hard to keep it clean.
Garbage left like this over the weekend is going to cause a wild animal issue. Its not the animals fault it the people!
Perhaps the City could post signs surrounding picnic and bleacher areas asking park patrons to ensure there garbage is secure in the garbage cans provided. Unfortunately, garbage and leftover food scattered in the parks attract coyotes.
