Hamilton Health Sciences’ (HHS) Juravinski Hospital emergency department saw over 25 hip fractures in the first week of February.

Experts are warning everyone to take extreme caution when navigating slippery surfaces to avoid this and other debilitating injuries.

“We’re always prepared and expect to see sprains and injuries, as well as a small number of fractures due to slips and falls during the winter, but the first week of February alone we saw over 25 patients with hip fractures,” says Dr. Alim Pardhan, Chief of Emergency Medicine at HHS. “The weather is likely to blame, and we encourage everyone to be cautious of your surroundings, wear appropriate footwear, and keep paths clear or salted.”

I suspect that seniors were the major casualties.
    Here are 3 tips:
1–Learn/research how to walk properly; especially in winter
    2–Be attentive when you walk
3–You cannot be attentive when you walk with dogs
