This year had the highest output of any March ever, up 1 million barrels from March 2025 and 26 million barrels from March 2016.

Alberta oil field production, barrels per month, Mar 2016-Mar 2026

Field production of Alberta crude was 86,900 barrels in March, according to StatsCan data released June 2.

While it’s not the top month ever — that came in December, when over 90,000 barrels were extracted for the first time — it is the biggest March ever. Production in March 2026 was two per cent higher than March 2025 and up 43 per cent from March 2016.

These pesky facts contradict a common argument of Alberta separatists, who claim federal policies have hurt production.

Oil companies extracting Canadian resources are also currently getting very high prices for their near-record production, although the Iran war, causing the price spike, had no impact on production costs in Canada.
