I think we were just had.
A photo op – is this the way the country is going to be led?
It was billed as a breakfast meeting between Prime Minister designate Mark Carney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford – where they were going to talk about the meeting Ford has with the US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick.
Turns out it was just another photo op that took place at Wally’s Grill on Rexdale Boulevard in Etobicoke.
“Thanks for the breakfast meeting, Premier @fordnation — and for standing up for Ontario,” Carney enthused on social media.
Serious stuff isn’t discussed in this kind of location.
Disappointing – very disappointing.
that “coffee shop summit” between Doug Ford and Mark Carney definitely seemed staged—like a PR stunt rather than a serious policy discussion. These guys know optics matter, and they wanted to create the illusion of high-level diplomacy in the most casual, relatable setting possible. It’s the same old political game: make it look like they’re working for the people while likely just pushing their own agendas behind the scenes.
The real question is, what was the actual purpose of that photo-op? Was Ford trying to cozy up to Carney, given Carney’s political ambitions? Or was this just about managing public perception—making it look like leaders from different political backgrounds are collaborating? Either way, it’s more theater than substance.
