Just how many not-for-profit organizations are there in the Region?
There are a lot of them – some are very well run. Unfortunately – there are far too many that are very poorly run.
Community Development, an organization that has had its own governance problems in the past has taken the lead on improving the level of governance for non-profits in the Region.
They are holding three workshops that volunteers should be required to attend if they want to serve on a board.

Non-Profit Board Primer: January 22, 2025
Board members set direction and provide the leadership, vision, and accountability to ensure their organization’s mandate is met. This training session is designed for new board members and covers the purpose of Boards, what they do and don’t do, legal obligations, liability, and fiduciary duty.
Holding Productive & Compliant Meetings: February 19, 2025
Board Succession Planning: March 19, 2025.
These training sessions should be mandatory and taken before a person becomes a not-for-profit Board member.
