BURLINGTON, ON
In Newsletter sent out by Emily Brown, the Conservative candidate in the last federal election (Karina Gould won by a 45% to 38% for Brown).
The headline asked:
ARE WE HEADED FOR A FALL ELECTION?
That was followed by a statement:
Conservative Party of Canada says, “Pierre Poilievre will force a confidence vote on Trudeau’s Liberal government AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. The House of Commons returns on Monday – we might see an election this fall. We need to act fast to prepare for a carbon tax election – but we need you to help Bring it Home.”
Brown continued with: “Exciting times are ahead with the dissolution of the Liberal-NDP supply and confidence agreement and the return of MPs to the House for the fall sitting of parliament today!
“This brings us to a pivotal moment with an election edging closer and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre poised to call a non-confidence vote at the first opportunity.
“For those of us in the Burlington Riding, it is imperative that Conservatives unite by joining the Conservative Party, to be eligible to vote in the upcoming nomination to elect Emily Brown, a candidate who truly represents our community’s values and who is dedicated to addressing our community’s unique needs.
“Take this important step today and become a Conservative Party member at emilybrown.ca/membership to make a difference in Burlington and beyond.”
Brown ran a disappointing campaign in 2022. Her campaign team kept her hidden – there was never an opportunity to interview her. Instead the campaign positioned her as a “shootin – tootin” female. The truth was that guns for Brown were a hobby – something she enjoyed doing and was good at.
I got to know Emily Brown after the election: she is a smart woman, quite accomplished and would be a good MP once she had learned the ropes.
It would not take this woman long to become a junior Cabinet Minister – if Poilievre were to become the Prime Minister – and that’s where the problem rests. Both the Liberals and the Conservatives have leadership problems and Jagmeet Singh isn’t going anywhere.
The results of the by-election in Montreal, where the ballots have 90+ names, will tell us a lot. We should know by midnight if Singh has any life left in him and if Justin Trudeau has any oxygen left.
In a conversation with Brown during a Remembrance day event last year she told me she was part of a military family who was “a conservative in the womb”
I tried to convince she could be a very good Liberal candidate.
I obviously failed.
The Bloc will not bring down the Liberals so as to extract whatever more they can get for Quebec. The NDP has no money are down in the polls and wont vote to bring down Trudeau. The two person Green party votes could prove to be interesting but they will support the Liberals unless Justin backs off on the carbon tax. There you have it we are stuck with Trudeau and Karina until next October as they hope for better days poll wise. Will Trudeau leave on his own, NOPE.
I vote none of the above.
My my – decisions, decisions and are any of them palatable. There is no question, I think, that Karina Gould is an excellent constituency politician but her ties to Trudeau are probably toxic for her. Brown could deserve an opportunity but PP is really a horrible alternative. Mr. Mian may be a “highly accomplished Burlington resident and business man” but his closeness to the Ford family is not attractive and, frankly, I’ve had quite enough of developers. Please tell me again how they’re contributing to the housing crisis.
Pardon me please for going off on something of a tangent but the name of your commenter struck a wee chord in my memory. Plunk, plunk. As I recall, there was a complaint against one member of the Committee of Adjustment (COA) that required an investigation by the City’s Integrity Commissioner. The recommendation of the Commissioner was that the Committee of Adjustment ‘in toto’ should undergo training in the ethics of conducting their committee functions. How do I discover whether such training has occurred and which members of the COA, if any, have had the training? Do you know? It would be nice if there was some consistent follow-up to IC recommendations. There certainly was in the case of Councillor Stolte – and high drama to boot.
Emily Brown had just 35 days to reach out to her riding before Election 2021 was called.
Although she placed second, in that short time, she managed to get the most 2nd place votes of any Candidate for any Party in Canada. She is a wonderful lady who gets things done and is a visionary for Canadas’ future. Emily will definitely have my vote for Burlington as a needed breath of fresh air this city needs!
Burlington: Do Not Nominate Shaheryar Mian

The Montreal results are in, Trudeau is done, and any suggestion that Brown could be a Liberal would never work, Justin discards any Woman who is not subservient to him; I like everything about Brown even her chosen sport, and Pierre Poilievre has enthused the working parts of Canada with hope.
Totally agree with Graham. Karina Gould is a very nice person that does not necessarily mean she is right for the position she holds. She is a loyal Liberal spewing out exactly what Justin Trudeau says.
Personally, I would like to know if her personal opinions match those of the current Prime Minister.
Of course doing so would result in not achieving the power/status she presently holds in Parliament.
What’s worse PP as a leader or Justin Trudeau as a leader?
six of one half a dozen of the other
We have a great MP in Karina Gould…I don’t need someone like Brown who has guns as a hobby no matter how smart someone thinks she is…
Karina never hides from the electors and has done and continues to do a great job for Burlington.
That’s why we don’t have a balanced budget and we still have first past the post elections. Heck of a job Karina!
I wouldn’t describe her performance as Minister of Democratic Institutions (i.e. broken promise of replacing ‘first past the post’ and unabated foreign interference in our elections) as “great”, or as Minister of Families, Children & Social Development (i.e. passport issuing debacle solved only by belatedly hiring 1000s more civil servants) as “great”. Now overseeing a speedy dissolution of parliament as Liberal House Leader, that would be “great”!
Karina is a horrible MP and is not the choice for Burlington. Her views are archaic, weighted and quite stagnant. She never replies to emails personally and has refused to meet with me in person. Crimes are way up across Canada & Karina is out of touch with reality when it comes to policing. She and her party would rather focus on banning firearms from licensed and law abiding Canadian citizens instead of working on the root of the problem – criminals and gang members with illegal guns smuggled across the US border. It’s ridiculous.
One excellent candidate you have missed (balanced coverage please) is Shaheryar Mian, a highly accomplished Burlington resident and business man. You can get more information on him a smian.ca.
Editor’s note: We searched for the people seeking the nomination; the name didn’t come up. If you want balance Nick – suggest the the person you appear to be supporting get out there and make some noise.
Shaheryar Mian is a fraudster, proof:

The same Shaheryar Mian with family ties to the development community?
Mian is a Developer. He was a Liberal who donated alot of money to the Liberal Party. Now turned Conservative???
And, I understand that he does not own residential property in Burlington, but lives in Mississauga where he resides.
He has a Development Company in Burlington.
You clearly didn’t search very hard. All you had to do was click on the link I gave you.. Once more it’s https://smian.ca/
Editor’s note: The link sent to me came AFTER the story was written. Now that we know who the third person wanting to be the Progressive Conservative for Burlington is – we will ensure he gets the coverage all the other individuals get.
I don’t know her but am very impressed with her efforts to connect with Burlington voters week after week over the past year.
Gould us not a strong politician.Only good at repeating the prepared speaking points sent out by PMO
Gould failed with both ArriveCan and providing passports during the pandemic.
“A better campaign and a better leader would make a difference for Brown this time out.”
Too bad she’s stuck with PP as leader.
Infinitely better than being stuck with JT.
