BURLINGTON, ON
This article has been revised
The Burlington Federal Conservatives have decided who their candidate will be in the next federal election that has to take place before October 20, 2025, to elect members of the House of Commons to the 45th Canadian Parliament.
Emily Brown was chosen by a secret ballot at a meeting that was described by a person attending as a “packed house” with people outside waiting to get in.
Connor Fraser, a newcomer to Burlington politics, was also seeking the nomination.
Current MP Karina Gould is expected to run again.
Gould serves as the House Leader for the Government, a job understood by few who are not politically active.
It is a 24/7 job – always on call, always beside the Prime Minister and on her feet more than anyone else when the House is sitting.
Gould has a strong following – the concern will be – how strong a following does Leader of the Opposition Pierre Poilievre have and what will the poor view of the Prime Minister have on the people of Burlington?
At least we now know who the candidates in Burlington are going to be.
As a former supporter of MP Gould, I was deeply disappointed by her response on October 3, 2024. In one of her tireless moments of standing and aligning with the Prime Minister, she rose to address a clear and direct question about why a repeat offender—who had violated the terms of their probation and was out on bail—ended up shooting a police officer in the stomach. Instead of providing a straightforward answer, MP Gould appeared to suggest that the Charter rights of the offender were more important than those of law-abiding citizens and the individuals who serve and protect them.

Congratulations to Emily Brown, our next MP!
This paper tends to favour Karina Gould . Look back at all the articles on Conservative candidate Emily Brown for unfavourable reporting.
Editors Note: Not so Eve – Emily has been given a lot of ink. Gould is the MP, and a member of Cabinet – part of the job is top report on what she is doing and what she has done.
Recall as well that during the first election Emily was instructed to not talk to media. And she didn’t – instead she let her managers define her as a gun totting female. I can assure you that Emily Brown is much more than a woman who can shoot a rifle and assure you as well that is very good at that.
If you want to know more about Emily Brown who will be running against Trudeau in Burlington in the next election watch this.
Excellent interview! Everyone in Burlington should watch and listen to it.
Thank you for sharing it.
Not sure why the focus of an article titled “Emily Brown will be the Conservative Candidate in the next federal election” gives more attention and unsubstantiated praise to Karina Gould, who’s party, in recent cases, has abdicated the democratic process of voting for nominees in favour of appointments by their leader. (eg: Appointment of Laura Palestini by Trudeau to replace David Lametti’s riding in Montreal in July 2024 without party vote)
Yet here we have an example of the conservatives having a record turnout for a democratic process to nominate one of two seemingly very qualified candidates and the story is essentially that one of them won!!
I was also surprised that the original article sounded like a puff piece for Gould. Not what I expected from Pepper. And using Liberal supporter comments in favour of Gould had no place in the article.
If I were Emily Brown’s campaign manager, I would visually depict and verbally describe her Liberal opponent as Justin Trudeau, donning a Karina Gould mask. Penny is right, it’s time for a change!
Gordo i totally agree. We need a change. This isn`t about personalities but rather standing up for Burlington residents.Gould needs to go and we the PC`s need a candidate that will win in the next election.I don`t think that is going to happen with choice that was made. This article was more about Gould than the nominees. It was slanted towards Emily Brown rather than being neutral. I was there also and no i don`t agree with you could hear a pin drop while Connor Fraser was talking
Congrats to Emily Brown! She has my full support! One question… how did an announcement about the winner of the Conservative race become a promotion for Karina Gould and the Liberal Party? The idea that Gould has done a good job is pure opinion and the article show be labeled as such. Reporting should be unbiased. I don’t need to read the weak opinions of some KoolAid drinking Liberal “Useful Idiot”. Pathetic.
The original story has been revised. Some bias crept into the article making it a bit of an opinion piece.
On the other-hand, not too many Gould supporters weighed in. Unless the Gazette readership is mostly Conservative in which case the feedback would not be representative.
Note to Pepper, dont bite the hand that follows you.
Karina Gould has done a very poor job, by covering up Liberal scandals and telling lies about Conservatives. Only a corrupt person can support a corrupt government.
Emily Brown spoke out strongly last night in favor of changes that would benefit Burlington. She will fight for the needs of Burlington!! Her opponent last night spoke of himself, and his history, and then he spoke out against his ‘opponent’, Emily Brown, just before he was finished his address. You could here a pin drop in the room for a second.
We want a real, kind and gracious representative that will stand up boldly for the real concerns of Burlington! Emily Brown is that representative!
I arrived at the Convention Centre at about 6:30 pm, and not a parking spot to be had, we were parking everywhere and anywhere, no one was leaving and as stated the line to vote started at the main door, but went very quickly after saying a quick Hi to Emilly I was out within an hour.
Climate hysteria?
Pepper, please include a hand gesture for the amount of the cheque Karina and the Liberals are planning to send seniors and vulnerable Canadians, especially those whose income is less than $130,000.
As to knowing who the candidates are. Who will be running for the NDP? That candidate could very well steal the same “hand gesture amount” of votes from Gould.
Your article should have described the Conservative nomination meeting. Ms Gould’s record has nothing to do with this nomination. You made the article a Gould love-in. She has been Trudeau’s patsy and often this has not been in the best interests of the country or Burlington.
Yes it was a packed house, both candidates spoke prior to voting, over all a very well organized event. Conservative Party memberships were verified with two pieces of photo ID with home address, unlike the voting system used by the liberals where bus loads of foreign students (non Canadian citizens) could be brought in to vote! Ballots are confidential, as always, not sure why the it’s referred to as secret?
And yes Gould is the worst MP we’ve had, goes on CTV recently and lies about documents requested by Parliament related to her party’s green slush fund. The list of failings is a long one, and this just the last example. As pointed out she is only loyal to Trudeau and not the people of Burlington.
Having followed the U.S. election very closely and based on that, thinking there is no way Trump was going to win, I have no idea whether Karina Gould will survive should the LPC become yet another progressive government that bites the dust. As to the size of the hand gesture used to demonstrate the size of plurality to win a seat, it cuts in both directions.
It is also the gesture former Prime Minister Harper used over 9 years ago to warn Candians about the the size of the Trudeau government deficits of which Gould is a caucus member. No one paid attention to the message or gesture.
Stephen Harper on Trudeau’s deficit plan:
“Gould has done a decent job representing Burlington residents.” Has she? She is certainly an excellent retail politician whose dedication to self-aggrandizement is breathtaking. Gould’s advertisements proudly proclaim that “she represents Burlington in Ottawa” but this is pure political posturing; she actually represents Trudeau in Burlington. She is the ultimate Trudeau sycophant. Nowhere was this made more clear when she voted to expel Jody Wilson-Raybould and Dr. Jane Philpott from the Liberal caucus, spouting the same carefully dictated monologue that was being released from several Liberal speakers. JWR and Philpott were two of the most competent ministers in the Trudeau cabinet; they were far more accomplished than Gould and two ministers who chose to do what was right. However, Gould chose political expediency over integrity. She reinforced that view when she shamelessly tried to sweep the Hunka fiasco under the rug.
Gould has championed a government that has created the worst inflation in 40 years resulting in an affordability crisis that continues to persist with long lineups at food banks, a housing crisis with tent cities from coast to coast with such encampments set up here in Burlington and Halton, a debt crisis with interest payments ballooning past $54 billion per year as the Liberals’ fiscal anchor has been completely discarded, a corruption crisis staggering in the amounts of missing taxpayers’ money, and a crisis in rising violent crime.
If you want to see the real Karina Gould watch the following video in which her hyper partisanship and political expediency is exposed by JP Tasker from the CBC (I wonder how much longer he’ll have a job?): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFB4ap68Mbg
As House Leader, Minister Gould bears responsibility for the whole of the Trudeau Liberal record, which has been abysmal.
The climate hysteria attack on oil, subsidizing EV, tax structures leading to overall drop in productivity, the profligate spending to buy voter and press support…the list goes on. The drop of the dollar to historic lows is a reflection of the total loss of confidence in the Liberal management of our economy.
Minister Gould shares responsibility for this mess, and she and the Liberal government must be replaced as soon as possible !!!
if Miss Emily Brown losses again to Karina Gould, then that will be the fourth loss, that the current Halton PC riding has overseen. If this occurs, then the board/EDA of the Halton PC riding should step down as new insightful leadership is badly needed.
Hey Gordo, the PCs are provincial not Federal and there is no Halton riding. Also the Burlington Conservative Association has no say in who the candidate is, that is determined by the hundreds of members who voted. Your last name wouldn’t happen to be Fraser would it?
First off, it’s not the Halton EDA. It’s called the”Burlington Conservative EDA”. Second, it’s not the PC Party anymore, and hasn’t been since 2003. It’s called “the Conservative Party of Canada”. The PC Party is provincial, and the Conservative Party is federal. The two aren’t related. Finally, the Board of Directors don’t elect the candidate. The membership elects the candidate, like the 600+ good folks who showed up last night at the Convention Centre.
Finally, you make it sound like the Board of Directors aren’t doing their job. As a long-time Conservative Party member, and one who has served on the Board for several years, you’d have a hard time finding a more dedicated and committed group of volunteers. All those Town Hall events, fundraisers for Ukraine, social events, Earth Day events, etc., don’t happen by accident. Ditto the election campaign. A lot of people work tirelessly behind the scene to make things happen. If you had attended one of these, and I strongly suspect you haven’t, you’d quickly realize that.
The good news is that at least we agree on one thing. We do need insightful leadership, and we sure haven’t had that for the past nine years in Ottawa!
Karina Gould as you indicated in your article has a “strong following”. She is a very nice person. This does not necessarily mean she is good for the residents of Burlington.
I disagree that she has “been doing a very good job” Have you forgotten that she got up in Parliament and wanted the Hunka fiasco omitted from the records?
Karina does what Justin Trudeau asks of her-not necessarily what is in the best interest of Burlington residents or Canada.
It is time for change.
