BURLINGTON, ON
iPolitics reports that Ontario cabinet minister Karina Gould is giving serious thought to a Liberal leadership run, according to a source close to her.
In her role as government House leader, Gould has often squared off against Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre in the Commons, who she has called a “fraudster” and a “bully.”
The source said Gould has been receiving “numerous calls” for her to enter the race, which she is “actively considering.”
“The momentum has been overwhelming. [We’re at a] moment in time that is important for the party, for the country, and I think she realizes that.”
Could be – there will be an opportunity on Sunday for people to hear what Gould has to say when she holds her 10th New Year Levee – taking place at the Art Gallery at 1:30
This leadership race is just more theatre, just like Freeland quitting and Justin stocking to her in his resignation speech.
It will be climate tax Carney, no matter who “runs” and how the votes go.
Even to the most unenlightened political observer it is obvious that the country is entering a period of intense political uncertainty and change. Regardless of which party is elected we need leaders who have a good grasp of the economy and economic considerations. Even if one disagrees with their policies Ministers like LeBlanc and Freeland, and even an outsider like Mark Carney. comprehend this. Gould, clearly, does not meet the criteria. She has no practical business expertise, and she lacks experience heading a major government ministry. Her tenure as Minister of Democratic Reform and International Development doesn’t qualify her for higher leadership, and her achievements were, at best, underwhelming.
That said, whoever is elected Liberal leader faces an uphill climb. Justin waited way too long to leave, and has inflicted significant damage on his party, the new leader, and even his own reputation.
I think Gould would be a great candidate taking on the feckless Pierre Poilievre and engaging that criminal Trump. You go girl!
Of all the so called long list of people who would like to replace Justin Trudeau, Christy Clark is the only one who could run as a clean candidate, never having worked with Justin Trudeau in the past.
All of the others, including Karina Gould, are just like Justin, having supported everything he has done in the last 9 plus years as Prime Minister.
Joe,
I agree with you. It won’t work.
This reminds me of the provincial Liberals after Wynne, blindly choosing Del Duca to lead the party, oblivious to the fact that the voters were equally irate at all Wynne’s ministers and MPPs. It seemed obvious to the electorate that choosing someone so closely tied to the disastrous Wynne government was going to backfire spectacularly, which it did.
And now we have the federal Liberals also blindly – arrogantly ? – doing the same thing. I think if Gould or any other member of Trudeau’s team is named the next leader, they’re being “Kim Cambelled.” I find it hard to believe that many don’t realize this; perhaps this is the plan and they hope the chosen person will for some reason sacrifice themselves anyway. Or perhaps it’s all theatre and Mark Carney or Christy Clark will prevail in the end.
Pure cannon fodder. No chance she could raise the money necessary for a run, and that would just be the start of a colossal failure.
For those that have been living under a rock for the past two years, if you are looking to burn some money, this would be a perfect cause.
I think that these negative Conservatives cannot possibly know that Karina is an accomplished, hard working, loyal, competent, intelligent person whose integrity can above all, never been questioned. She has always had Burlington’s and Canada’s best interests at heart. She is willing to listen while also standing by her own values and never disparages others whether they agree with her or not. We are fortunate to have someone with her ability and character representing us.
This is unbelievable.
Karina Gould thinks she should run for the Liberal leadership. This is what happens when you surround yourself in a bubble of your “tribe”. You know when family members think that you bake good cookies or make a great meal that you should then open a restaurant.
Karina was elected at the right time and timing is everything. Her fearless leader was determined to have a gender based cabinet.
Karina played the game properly and never challenged anything that the liberals did. Doing so allowed her to rise up through the ranks unlike Jody Wilson Raybould, Jane Philpott and ultimately Chrystia Freeland who dared to let the public what was happening.
I was told, so this is not first hand information, that when asked how Karina could consider being the leader of the party with the workload, travel etc because she had a young family her response was “there would be daycare available in the Parliament building (guess at the taxpayer’s expense).
For those of you who will jump on this and say that times have changed and men leave their families to travel etc I will say that in my opinion, especially in their younger years a mother’s presence is extremely important in the lives of their children.
Probably a good strategy to keep her seat. Beyond that, nah.
Not a single cabinet minister in the Trudeau government will stand a chance in a federal election–for the past 9 years, they have aided & abetted Trudeau’s documented history of lies, corruption, and incompetence. Gould as the ultimate Trudeau sycophant will be lucky to be competitive in her own riding.
