Burlington MP Karina Gould had words for her constituents:
Parliament is back in session and the Government is focused on building a resilient economy.
Prime Minister Carney went to Washington, D.C. this week to discuss tariffs and the renegotiation of CUSMA with President Donald Trump. While he didn’t come away with an agreement in hand, he did come away stating progress had been made when it comes to Energy, Steel and Aluminum and to assure Canadians he will not negotiate any deal but a good deal for Canada.
I have been staunchly advocating for support for our Steel and Auto industries – two of the most heavily impacted industries by American tariffs – as the Prime Minister engages with the President and am pleased that the Government has created a fund to support our businesses and – most importantly – our workers through these challenging economic times. I’ve spoken to a number of business leaders and workers over the past number of months and my promise remains: I will keep standing up for you every single day in Ottawa. These are difficult times, but together, united, we will get through this and I firmly believe we will come out stronger.
In September, the Government also launched the Build Canada Homes Agency to build affordable housing at scale in Canada. Canada has one of the lowest rates of public or not for profit housing in the OECD countries. This is an important and generational change that will be transformational for housing in Canada and for Canadians.
As Chair of the Finance Committee, we are currently studying Bill C-4 “Making Life More Affordable for Canadians Act” that will bring in a middle class tax cut as well as removing the GST on new homes for first time homebuyers. We also heard from the Minister of Finance that the budget will be introduced on November 4th.
Following this Thanksgiving weekend, I hope everyone had a lovely long weekend with friends and family. I am so grateful to serve this community and am excited to note that on October 19th, I will be celebrating 10 years as your Member of Parliament – the greatest honour and privilege one can have, to serve your community and country.
