A number of weeks ago, Eric Vandewaal, president of the Joseph Brant Hospital chose ignore requests for comment on the front page + four pages inside the Hamilton Spectator article on the state of conditions on the hospital.
It was not a pretty picture.
Vandewaal has been a senior executive for the past twenty years and should know better; when you are the president of a public tax payer institution there is a responsibility to react to news and engage the public.
It appears there is another story on the hospital working its way to the front page.
Until that appears we can leave you with the data in the chart shown below.

How many lives did Eric save during the pandemic? How outrageous is his salary increase when the actual people who did the work to save people’s lives have their wages capped at a 1% raise yearly thanks to the Ford government. Why aren’t the wages of hospital CEOS and other high ranking hospital personnel capped at the same rate? Something is definitely wrong with this picture. Thank you to the Gazette for providing this information. How can those individuals who perform the greatest tasks at the hospital walk away with so little.
This is obscene. What a huge insult to all of us.
Well, what most people don’t realize is that the posted Sunshine List salaries actually lag by 1 year. In other words, Mr. Vandewall is making even more folks, although a $100 k boost in one year leaves me speechless, or is it gagging or is it both.
At the very least, to paraphrase a favourite character on SNL – “Covid has been very, very good to me”!
