BURLINGTON, ON
Now that the kids are back in school, learning to live without their cell phone in their hands the province is interested in know what you think they should be taught in terms of life skills like: learning how to change a car tire , learning how to sew buttons and put a hem on a pair of trousers.
I thought those were things that parents and grandparents taught you to do? Maybe I’m old school.
Link to the provincial survey is HERE
When I was in high school the girls took home economics and the boys took shop. The only thing I would change is that boys could be in home economics and the girls in shop should they choose to do so.
We learned valuable life lessons in home economics. Some of us were not fortunate enough to have grandparents to teach them. My mother did and as I became an adult, married and had children I had a very good base on how to run a household.
How many young people today know how to sew on a button, change a flat tire, balance a cheque book or budget?
Schools have become political and that should not be their mandate. Schools are there to educate not indoctrinate and we need to go back to the basics that include life skills.
I filled out the survey, I hope others will as well.
