BURLINGTON, ON
Wow! This is going to hurt.
In her letter of resignation, Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland said:
“For the past number of weeks, you and I have found ourselves at odds about the best path forward for Canada.
“Our country today faces a grave challenge. The incoming administration in the United States is pursuing a policy of aggressive economic nationalism, including a threat of 25 per cent tariffs.
“We need to take that threat extremely seriously. That means keeping our fiscal powder dry today, so we have the reserves we may need for a coming tariff war. That means eschewing costly political gimmicks, which we can ill afford and which make Canadians doubt that we recognize the gravity of the moment.”
“… costly political gimmicks,…”
That’s about as damning as it can get.
Prime Minister Trudeau met with the Minister of Financne to tell her that she was being removed as Minister of Finance but he would give her a different Cabinet seat. Freeland chose to resign as a member of Cabinet.
The complete letter:
Dear Prime Minister.
It has been the honour of my life to serve in government, working for Canada and Canadians. We have accomplished a lot together.
On Friday, you told me you no longer want me to serve as your Finance Minister and offered me another position in the Cabinet.
Upon reflection, I have concluded that the only honest and viable path is for me to resign from the Cabinet.
To be effective, a Minister must speak on behalf of the Prime Minister and with his full confidence. In making your decision, you made clear that I no longer credibly enjoy that confidence and possess the authority that comes with it.
For the past number of weeks, you and I have found ourselves at odds about the best path forward for Canada.
Our country today faces a grave challenge. The incoming administration in the United States is pursuing a policy of aggressive economic nationalism, including a threat of 25 per cent tariffs.
We need to take that threat extremely seriously. That means keeping our fiscal powder dry today, so we have the reserves we may need for a coming tariff war. That means eschewing costly political gimmicks, which we can ill afford and which make Canadians doubt that we recognize the gravity of the moment.
That means pushing back against ‘America First’ economic nationalism with a determined effort to fight for capital and investment and the jobs they bring. That means working in good faith and humility with the Premiers of the provinces and territories of our great and diverse country, and building a true Team Canada response.
I know Canadians would recognize and respect such an approach. They know when we are working for them, and they equally know when we are focused on ourselves. Inevitably, our time in government will come to an end. But how we deal with the threat our country currently faces will define us for a generation, and perhaps longer. Canada will win if we are strong, smart and united.
It is this conviction which has driven my strenuous efforts this fall to manage our spending in ways that will give us the flexibility we will need to meet the serious challenges presented by the United States.
I will always be grateful for the chance to have served in government and I will always be proud of our government’s work for Canada and Canadians.
I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues as a Liberal Member of Parliament, and I am committed to running again for my seat in Toronto in the next federal election.
With gratitude.
The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, P.C., M.P.
Freeland’s ancestral family experiences and historic political failures should not be forcefully impressed on a future society to justify and celebrate her family’s actions.
WHY is Justin still Prime Minister? I guess as long as people like Karina Gould continue to support him ( December is not a good time to look for a new job) we have to sit back and wait for the NDP to finally back a non-confidence motion.
Sad state of affairs.
Trudeau literally bragged less than a week ago that he’s a “proud feminist” and said “I’ve touted the adage, ‘add women, change politics,’ which to us is more than just words. We’ve taken action to make it a reality, appointing the first female finance minister”.
He then fired said finance minister two days later and threw yet another strong female minister under the bus. His whole feminist mantra is a lie.
The magnitude of his detachment from reality and size of ego have no limits. He has been and continues to be a clear and present danger to the country
Finally the beginning of the end for this floundering government.Singh is also going to pay for supporting Liberals so he can reach a pension. What a phony.
As we can ill afford? Sounds like a breakup letter to me. “Oh, you’re blaming me for this mess? You’re the one that continues to run up our debt, Who the hell is meant to pay that off?”.
It speaks volumes about Trudeau that, in the face of real and cogent opposition from across the country and within his own Party, that he continues to lamely battle on. If he had an ounce of common sense and a shred of dignity he would do the honourable thing and resign. Doing so would be the best Christmas present any of us could ever hope to receive.
Editor’s note: Why do we continue to expect honour and decency from the people we elect. They are no different than anyone else – they look out for themselves and you let them do it.
Trudeau continues to demonstrate his “feminist” credentials by throwing yet another female Liberal MP under the bus. This government is in its death throes.
And another MP working under the Trudeau Party thumb, said enough is enough. Next, time for Trudeau to prorogue parliament to give the real Liberal Party the chance to chose a new non-gimicky leader.
When you think that Justin cannot do anything more asinine, He does.
Who in their right mind would fire the Minister of Finance the weekend prior to her having to present the budget?
Who would do that? Probably an incompetent person, someone with control issues, perhaps a poor listener, someone who was not ready to lead a country.
Enough !!! Trudeau must resign
