BURLINGTON, ONTARIO

Burlington MP Karina Gould addressed the House of Commons, telling members what winning the by-elections earlier in the month really means.

Burlington MP Karina Gould

Mr. Speaker, I always enjoy listening to my hon. colleague’s faux-righteous indignation. As much as I enjoy that, I think we need to put some facts on the table. The fact of the matter is that there is now a majority government here in Ottawa. With that comes the ability to have a majority on parliamentary committees. In those three by-elections that we had just last week, Canadians overwhelmingly voted for Liberal candidates. In fact, Conservative votes went down, incredibly.

I have a very simple question for my hon. colleague. I think he should be able to answer it. I would like to know, if ever the Conservatives have a majority in Parliament, given their argument right now, will he commit and will he promise to Canadians that Conservatives will not have a majority on committee?

Mr. Speaker, I have been here for over 10 years and I have seen a lot of theatrics in this place, but the drama coming from that last speech was a bit much even for that hon. member and the Conservatives.

Speaking as if we are taking away members’ rights and their opportunities to be representatives is over the top. In fact, every member in this House has an important role to play. What the government is doing is acting on the fact that we now have a majority.

I will put this to him because I did not actually get an answer from his House leader when I asked. If the Conservatives should ever, and we will see if that ever happens, find themselves in a situation where they have a majority government, will he commit right now to ensuring that the Conservatives do not hold a majority on committee?

    I totally agree with Phil.

For the last few months Karina Gould has stood up in Parliament with some ridiculous statements. Anything to try to seem relevant to the people of Burlington who voted her in.

What does it say about a Liberal government that provides perks for some conservative elected MP’s to cross the floor? Let’s not forget that Mr Ma got to go on the trip to China, and then “questioned a witness about reports of forced labour”.

Marilyn Gudokth was criticizing the Liberal Government days before she crossed the floor. She fundamentally does not agree with many of the Liberal Government’s policies. One being the stance on abortion. Have to wonder what she was promised?

My hope is that when all of those who crossed the floor lose their seats in the next Federal election.

They were elected to be part of the conservative party and in my opinion crossed the floor because they thought they would have a better chance of being reelected as a Liberal.

    Karma can be a b—h.

As usual, the same hyper-partisan talking points from the Liberal Party as repeated by Karina Gould. The reality is, no matter how the Liberals spin it, the Liberals did NOT win a majority in a general election. Karina seems to have omitted the fact that the Liberals persuaded 5 opposition MP’s to switch sides. What did these MP’s receive in exchange for betraying the voters who elected them?

Further, while Karina states that the Conservatives lost votes in the by-elections, she conveniently forgot to tell her constituents that the Liberals also lost votes in the by-elections. Two of these seats were Liberal strongholds and typically the third party never does well in a by-election; the third seat was a Bloc riding that should have never been up for a by-election except for some irregularities perpetrated by Elections Canada in the general election. Seems to have to forgotten to mention all these points.
