Why the rush to close Kelly's Bake Shop?

BURLINGTON, ON

That notice to vacate that Kelly’s Bake Shop got a week or so ago?

It is certainly valid; however, the City Planning department mentioned at Council earlier this week that they don’t have an application from the developer.

Mention was made of some possible financing for the development coming from CMHC (Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation).

Don’t expect to see a wrecking ball at this location soon.

It’s affordable rental housing going in as per City Hall. From what I hear there are many enraged residents. The builder needs a vacant parcel to get the final approval from Housing Accelerator Fund/CMHC so tossing out a viable small business with from what I understand 30 or 40 staff so he can get his funding from the government – Better known as bailouts. A friend of mine has a business in the downtown and he says he always gets customers coming in from Kelly’s Bakery. He is very upset about this.

Are there any tax reductions if the buildings are demolished?

It is bad enough to see the vacant buildings on this stretch of Brant Street. One can only imagine having to look at an empty building lot for possibly years until development takes place.

Who owns this parcel of land now?
