BURLINGTON, ON
When you see a notice like this in your electronic mail box you are at first startled and you want to do something immediately to ensure that there is not a problem with your email.
The instinct is to respond.
If you didn’t have a problem before you saw the email notice – you will most certainly have one if you do respond. You will have unwittingly given them access to your email.
This is what Identify Theft is all about.
Hans: I had the Netflix email too. Mine said that my subscription had been cancelled and if I didn’t cancel it I should click here to reinstate it asap. Since I don’t subscribe to Netflix that was a bit strange!
That Nigerian prime minister’s widow who wants to give me $10 million for
helping her get money out of her country seems very sincere, and I do like to be helpful 🙂
In all seriousness, an acquaintance got taken by the “grandpa, it’s me, I’m in trouble” scam (received a phone call claiming to be from a grandson in trouble and urgently needing cash, via Western Union please…), and lost about $9,000.
We all need to be vigilant.
A good reminder. I’ve had several requests this week for “account update info” (or something like that) from someone spoofing Netflix and it’s obviously an ID theft attempt. They never seem to get tired of trying…..
