Council members take a tour of the IKEA operation. Sharman takes a pass.

BURLINGTON, ON

They were just serving on behalf of the public they serve and doing a tour of the IKEA .  Looks like a happy enough occasion.

Council at IKEA

All they needed was the City Clerk and this could have been a meeting of city council. Councillor Sharman did not attend.

What would call for a tour of IKEA  that involved every member of council- except a Councillor who has been known to skip events?   Something new from IKEA?

Their plans for a re-locate a number of years ago to a site on the North Service Road didn’t work out – there were concerns from Conservation Halton related to just how close Tuck Creek was to the eastern edge of the property.

Maybe this was just an occasion for a big photo op.

I live in Ward 5 – did anybody ask why the councilor did not attend – given obligations one should ask

Personally I like to see the council members together and smiling (well most of them) rather than what I recall from the prior council where different adjectives come to mind.

In fairness, Instagram is all about photos and Twitter doesn’t allow for much in the way of descriptions. Agree you can’t govern by social media but there is lots of information about things happening at City Hall and in the wards also given out by councillors in newsletters, public meetings or the city website, etc. Unfortunately social media is widely used by many as their main (if not only) source of information, so here we are. I find it’s also increasingly where those who do nothing but troll and harass hang out, but that’s another issue altogether. Maybe at some point people will realize they should get their information from better sources and we can go back to respectful, factual dialogue. Doubt it, but we can always hope 🙂

This Council seems to love photo-ops. I have to agree. Why Ikea? For those of you who don’t do twitter or Instagram there are so many pictures of some councillors and the Mayor doing what I would have to call ribbon-cuttings etc. I would not mind as much if there was some description of the new business or where they were located, but no simply a picture. Self-promotion. Perhaps they have forgotten that they have been elected. It seems that some think they are still on the campaign trail.

I respect those councillors that do not do this, and only tweet or go on Instagram to inform residents of what is happening in their ward.
