We were advised today that there is a fifth candidate: Dr. Adil Shamji.  Our apologies for missing that.

The campaign for a new Ontario Liberal party leader reached Burlington on the weekend. Ted Hsu, currently the MPP for Kingston and the Islands, wants to lead the party and is crisscrossing the province to meet people who will be part of the process when a leadership convention takes place early in December.

Voting for the new leader will be a ranked ballot event instead of a convention at which the delegates choose.

Ted Hsu has been the MPP for Kingston and the Islands since the 2022 Ontario provincial election. He formerly served as federal Liberal MP for the Kingston and the Islands riding from 2011 to 2015, but chose not to run for re-election so he could spend more time with his family.

Hsu officially launched his Liberal leadership campaign late in May. He was joined on stage by guitarist Rob Baker of the Tragically Hip.

In a telephone interview Hsu took me though his views on key issues: energy, long term health care, protecting the Greenbelt and ensuring the homes that are going to be needed are built.

Hsu takes a strong policy view to running the province if he gets the opportunity but is realistic enough to know that policy doesn’t get you very far when it comes to votes.  He knows that getting in front of people and pressing the flesh is the way elections are won.

He doesn’t have a quickly recognized profile that he can rely upon.  The group he met with in Burlington was small, it’s summer time, people want to enjoy the weather and do family events.

Hsu said he thinks we are going to have to rely more on nuclear for the energy the province needs and that Ontario needs to “marshal the resources it has” and make the tools and technology that is in place available to the private sector who will create the jobs needed to grow the economy.       

Hsu was very firm on the creation of  gas plants – “We need to avoid going that route – fossil fuels are not a solution – they are the problem.

Hsu takes the approach that voters are going to have to trust the people they choose to lead them.  He spoke of the ‘Ring of Fire’, a northern area 540 km northeast of Thunder Bay Ontario where the unproven mineral deposits lie underneath the  carbon-rich peatlands of the James Bay Lowlands.

Mining that part of the province was an issue in the 2022 election.  There are outstanding questions about the Ring of Fire that that Hsu believes have to resolved first with the Indigenous community who Hsu said have a veto.

Hsu said he feels people elected to office need to bring a level of humility to the work they do and to constantly check on the work they do. “We need to be constantly testing and checking the impact of the decisions they make.

Asked if he thought the Ontario Liberals need to do what the federal Liberals did in the 60’s  when they held a national conference in Kingston on what the country needed in the way of a social policy.

Few would argue that Ontario desperately needs a distinct social policy; Hsu was non-committal on such an approach but he certainly knew what the 60’s event was all about and the role it played in creating many of the federal government programs in place today.

Re-earning the trust of voters was a phrase Hsu used often – “let them ask the hard questions, Hsu wanted the public to be able to poke and prod, he said he felt politicians had to be bold and fearless and risk losing some votes.

“We have to work at changing the culture” he said.

Ted Hsu was born in Bartsville, Oklahoma and moved to Canada when his father got a job teaching at Queen’s University. He graduated from Queen’s and pursued graduate studies at Princeton University, where he completed his PhD in physics in 1989. Hsu worked as a researcher and trader in Paris and Philadelphia for Banque Nationale de Paris, and as an executive director in the Tokyo office of Morgan Stanley, a global investment bank.

September 5 is the deadline for the Ontario Liberals leadership candidate registration. Candidates must have an entry fee of $100,000 and a refundable $25,000 deposit.

September 11is the final day for new members to join the party and be eligible to vote in the leadership election, except for members of student clubs, who have until September 26.

November 25 to 26 Party members will cast their votes by ranked ballot. The  Liberal members voted to scrap the party’s use of delegated conventions and instead use direct voting with a ranked ballot.

December 2 the Ontario Liberals will announce the round-by-round results.

The federal government’s Cost of Living Act creates a Grocery Rebate program that supports low income families and households.

This is the point at which those who do get the Grocery Rebate will realize how unrealistic the amount being given is.

The new one-time Grocery Rebate will deliver targeted inflation relief for 11 million low- and modest-income Canadians and families who need it most, with up to an extra $467 for eligible couples with two children; up to an extra $234 for single Canadians without children; and an extra $225 for seniors, on average.

The Grocery Rebate will be delivered to eligible Canadians on July 5, 2023, by direct deposit or cheque through the Canada Revenue Agency.

A single mother with one child and $30,000 in net income will receive $386.50 for groceries. This is in addition to the $1,160 she receives this year through the GST Credit.

A single senior with $20,000 in net income will receive $233.50 for groceries. This is in addition to the roughly $701 he receives this benefit year through the GST Credit.

A couple with two children and $35,000 in net income will receive $467 for groceries. This is in addition to the roughly $1,401 they receive this benefit year through the GST Credit.

Recipients will not need to apply for the Grocery Rebate, which will be delivered along with the July GST Credit payment.

However, they will need to file their 2021 tax return if they have not done so already to be able to receive the payment.

The net income levels; $30,000 for a family and $20,000 for single people will cut out a lot of people.  How a family with net income of $30,000 for tax purposes can survive indicates that the federal government is not in touch with what is happening at the supermarket level where the pain is severe.

Ward 2 Councillor Lisa Kearns was clearly on a bit of a role as she talked about how far behind the city is in terms using using technology.

Just about everybody gets their pay check delivered to their bank automatically.

Having the cheques printed, then stuff into envelops that had to addressed and then run through the postage meter and delivered to the post office.

Does anyone do that any more.  Not a city with something in the order of about 1000 people on the payroll.

Kearns told council members this:

Another simple thing is we’re getting our city employee paychecks physically sent in the mail to our houses. How is that not? Automated?

That is really hard to believe.

How does stuff like this happen.

Turns out what the Council member said may not be happening. A Gazette reader reports: ” I worked part-time for city 2009 to 2017 and our pay was directly deposited during those years. In fact city automated its whole payroll several years ago almost without a hitch compared to the disaster the federal govt have created.”

When asked to comment on reaction to the remarks she made during the Budget Workshop meeting Councillor said: “Pay stubs are delivered by mail.”

Adi Developments announce today that a settlement of all outstanding regulatory issues has been reached with the HCRA. Tariq Adi, CEO of Adi Developments, said, “We are happy to have this behind us and look forward to completing our existing projects and bringing more high-quality homes and communities to the Greater Toronto Hamilton Area (GTHA) market.”

Adi Developments, a developer with a 15-year record of building successful housing projects in the GTHA, was notified of the HCRA’s intent to revoke Adi’s building and vending licences on August 25^th, 2022.  Adi appealed this to the Ontario License Appeal Tribunal.

At the same time, Adi initiated discussions with the HCRA aimed at resolving the issues outside of the appeal process. Today’s announced agreement is the culmination of those discussions.

The settlement encompasses the following key elements:

The Nautique: currently under construction

The Lakeshore project at the centre of the HCRA’s action was the first cancellation in Adi’s 15-year history, driven by a dramatic increase in construction costs which seriously jeopardized the project.

“These are unprecedented times for the development industry,” said Tariq Adi.  “We were facing cost escalations in the range of $43M which the project simply could not absorb. As a result, we had to seek additional financing and reconfigure the project in order to be in a position to complete it. Regrettably, however, the situation forced us to cancel purchase agreements, which we hated to do because our customers are the most important part of our business.”

For purchasers who opted to stay with the Lakeshore project, Adi mitigated the impact of the cancellations by allowing them to re-purchase their units at approximately 20% below market prices and crediting them with $10,000 per unit in décor dollar upgrades. The project is currently 85% sold with construction actively underway and going strong.

For purchasers who opted not to enter into a new purchase agreement, Adi, as a gesture of goodwill, began paying them 6% interest on their deposits in May 2022, something Adi did not have to do. This will result in more than $2,500,000 being paid directly to affected purchasers.
