BURLINGTON, ON

Just after 5:00 pm yesterday, a pedestrian was struck by a Via train on the CN railroad tracks near Plains Road west and Spring Gardens Road.

The train was heading for Toronto from Windsor when the collision occurred.

The incident did not occur at a level crossing, and there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.

This is the first pedestrian/train related fatality in the Region of Halton in 2016.

If the train was westbound, why did the train originate in Windsor?
I would think the train was eastbound towards Toronto.

As for the pedestrian, many people of today’s generations think walking along or beside railway tracks is the thing to do. Trains are quiet and can sneak up on unsuspecting tresspassers.

Railway operating crews are required to report on their radios if tresspassers are noted on or near tracks when their train passes. It is a common occurence, sadly.

Editor’s note: An observant reader caught an error – the media release we got from the police said the train was westbound – we copied what they gave us – need to be more observant ourselves – our apologies for that misleading information. we will pass on the mistake to the police.
