The provincial government has made it very easy to learn who got paid more than $100,000 during 2015. What was a little tough, especially for those who are far below that $100,000 figure, is the title of the Minister who released the data – Deb Matthews is President of the Treasury Board, and Minister Responsible for the Poverty Reduction Strategy.
Getting more people onto that $100,000 list would help – the 15 cent an hour increase in the minimum wage that was announced isn’t going to do all that much is it?
The searchable list of those hard working folks on what has come to be known as the “sunshine list” is a click away: CLICK HERE
When you search to learn what our council members are paid realize that they get a cheque from both the city and the Region.
the 15 cents is about 250 dollars a year after taxes for someone working full time
The major flaw is the ‘shell-game’ played with the sunshine list. You could be making a total of $250K per year as a public employee but only show up on the list at $120K as the rest of your income is made under your other title(s) making less than $100K……….i.e., VP of HR ($120K) + director of quality control ($70K) + manager of purchasing ($60K).
This is an extremely common practice.
In my opinion, there is a major flaw in this “sunshine” list. Twenty some odd years ago (plus?), the amount of money had significance as a benchmark. Today and for some time, jobs such as police, education etc. find themselves on this list but were not when the original figure was stated. There has been an increase in the minimum wage but never a raise in the the benchmark of $100,000 for this sunshine list. What would be the present day benchmark to make it equitable for when this practice started? $150, 000? $200, 000? or ?
