Why is gas always a couple of pennies higher in Burlington than it is in Hamilton?

BURLINGTON, ON

There is someone else out there who asks the question the Gazette has been asking for some time.

kabbash-on-gas-pricesWhy is gas always a couple of pennies higher in Burlington than it is in Hamilton?

The best I can come up with is – the owners of the gas stations know they can get away with it. They see Burlington as a wealthy community that they can suck extra dollars out of.

If you want it to change – walk with your wallets.

A couple of years ago we did a piece on this.  Nothing has changed.

The prices were higher but the differences we basically the same – you pay more in Burlington.  Why – because we have a better civic government?

If the Burlington Costco had a gas station, then you might see lower pricing.

Good point. My friends in Ancaster get a real price break at the pumps at their Costco. We’re being discriminated against here in Burlington by Costco.

Wr happen to live near the most expensive corners for gasoline in Burlington (Guelph Line with three major oil company stations on the corners at Mainway and Mountainside. Their prices rise and fall in perfect synch with each other and are often higher than the posted GTA price! Why would we pay more than Toronto? South of the QEW whether east or west or south, and north of the QEW near Walkers and Appleby the gas is a little cheaper than my neighbourhood stations.

I think our prices may be high because Guelph Line is a very busy interchange and Mountainside is very close to the QEW.

Yes Burlington has high gasoline prices. Head to Hamilton or Flamborough and you’ll find much cheaper prices, but it’s really not worth the drive unless you’re passing thru anyway (I’ve done the math). They charge what the market will bear, and so far their plan has worked.

A couple of pennies????? Quite often, in the 8 to 10 cents per litre range. My solutions. 1. Check a website called, “hamilton gas prices”–type in Burlington Gas Prices. This will give you an idea where the best prices are. 2. If you are stuck buying gas in Burlington, NEVER get gas in the morning (prices are highest); try to buy in the evening (drops of 5-8 cents are not uncommon) 3. if you are heading out-of-town locally, try gasoline alley on Hwy 6 north of Clappisons or East Hamilton (again check the “hamilton gas prices” site) 4. make sure you use a credit card that gives cash rebates on gas purchases AND use a gas station that has some form of loyalty program.

  • Actually it is more than a couple of cents at many gas retailers
