BURLINGTON, ON

The Gazette reported yesterday on the response to the question – where should the next Rainbow crosswalk be located.

There were more than 4000 responses – with 2813 wanting to see it located on Fairview near the Drury Street intersection which is the location of the Catholic District School Board.

One can see some differences of opinion when the matter gets to council on Tuesday. What comes first – the wishes of the supporters of the gay community or the wishes of a school board that decided not to permit the flying of the rainbow flag at Catholic schools.

Delicate.

The responses and the way the numbers broke down are set out below.

Some demographics on the people who responded.

It would have been useful to see some additional demographic data like age and gender.  It will be interesting to hear what, if any, interpretation staff provide and what position council members take.

Asking in earnest – would this not be better placed outside a school/Teen Tour Way/near a community centre? I know this is how the public voted, I was just thinking that the youth of our society deserve to see symbols of acceptance & welcoming, more than the people who work in this building. The Catholic Church has failed on several fronts the last few weeks, so maybe once they come to terms with their past, and stop with the hypocritical statements, then we can talk about how to move forward. Anyway, I’m proud of the youth in our City for speaking up, and I’m happy to hear others’ opinions, I just liked the idea of having the crosswalk somewhere that has more public presence, and in a more pedestrian-friendly area. Thoughts?

To acknowledge the rainbow as a sign of God’s biblical promise not to flood the earth and destroy most of sinful humanity ever again as He did in Noah’s days, in front of the Catholic School Board offices seems totally appropriate to me. What’s the issue?

The problem I have is the 10,000 dollars to paint the lines, surely there is a cheaper way.
