Police holding their second firearms amnesty - they took 180 weapons off the streets during the first amnesty.

News 100 redBy Pepper Parr

October 15th, 2015

BURLINGTON, ON

Have the Regional Police come to the conclusion that if the public hasn’t used their weapons to shoot all the politicians before they elect one of them to the House of Commons – then perhaps another gun amnesty is due – to get the weapons off the streets.

The Halton Regional Police Service will be hosting its second regional Firearms and Weapons Amnesty from October 19 to October 29, 2015.

The public is  being  encouraged to surrender their unregistered or unwanted firearms and weapons to the Halton Regional Police.

Guns weapons amnestyThis amnesty is an opportunity for members of the community to hand in firearms and/or weapons and ammunition that are unused, inherited or illegal, without the fear of being charged for having them.

The Halton Regional Police Service aims to create a safer community by removing these firearms and weapons from locations such as homes, businesses and schools to prevent their use in violent crimes.

Currently, in Ontario there are over 500,000 citizens who hold valid Possession Licenses (POL) and Possession and Acquisition licenses (PAL).

There are over 300,000 restricted and prohibited firearms registered in Ontario, not including non-restricted firearms (long guns).
In some circumstances, POL and PAL licensees no longer wish to keep their firearms due to age, ability and residential location. POL and PAL holders often omit or forget to renew their license and/or are deceased, leaving the firearms unregistered or in the possession of unlicensed family members. This amnesty is an opportunity to have the police come and safely take these weapons away.

During this amnesty, the police encourage people to turn in illegally held guns and ammunition and any other unwanted firearms, imitation firearms and air guns. In addition, any weapon that may pose a threat to public safety such as switchblades, butterfly knives, pepper spray, nunchuks, shurikens, push daggers, knife-combs, crossbows, spiked wristbands, batons and/or blowguns.

Between October 19 and October 26, a dedicated telephone line will be available to arrange a firearm or weapon pick up. (905) 465-8733 will be monitored from Monday to Saturday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm during the ten days.

DO NOT BRING ANY WEAPONS OR FIREARMS TO A POLICE STATION.

DO NOT TRANSPORT FIREARMS OR WEAPONS IN YOUR VEHICLE.

DO NOT GREET OFFICERS AT THE DOOR WITH FIREARMS/WEAPONS.

Officers assigned to pick up the weapons will provide police identification and will require a signature for destruction.

This Amnesty is an opportunity for everyone to take part in removing these firearms and weapons from the community, reducing the risk of them falling into the hands of criminals.

Last year, approximately 180 firearms were turned in, about 40 knives and 200 pounds of ammunition.

Burlington area fraud victims lose close to $20,000 to scam artists - double check requests fr funds no matter how convincing the story.

Crime 100By Staff

October 2, 2015

BURLINGTON, ON

The Halton Regional Police Service have received three separate complaints from victims of a variant of a common phone fraud known as the “Grandparent Scam”. All three victims were residents of the City of Burlington and all three had adult children who were the subject of the scam.

The fraudsters are calling un-suspecting victims and claiming to represent the victims son/daughter who has been involved in an accident and needs financial assistance in order to be released following an arrest.

The fraudsters will then ask the victim to wire money to another third party usually out of the country in order to effect the release of their son or daughter.

In the latest rash of calls the suspects have been asking for money to be wired to Lebanon and combined the victims have wired a little under $20,000 dollars overseas. Once the suspects find a victim who is willing they will continue to call and ask for more money for various other delays in the court process.

The Halton Police Fraud Unit is warning the public of these ongoing frauds and advising that before doing anything to contact the involved family member and confirm they are OK.

Prevention is the biggest tool at the disposal of the police in these circumstance and once the money has been wired overseas it is gone for good and following the trail to a suspect is almost never successful. Any of the information provided during the phone call or for the purposes of the financial transaction is fake and subsequent investigation only takes police to a dead end.

Also still prevalent in the GTA area is the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) phone scam. Police again want to warn members of the public that the CRA will never solicit money owing on an account over the phone. There are numerous administrative stages that the CRA will enter into first before making any demands for payment of fines or accounts and anyone who receives a phone call claiming to be from the CRA as their first contact on a delinquent account should independently contact the CRA to confirm the information.

With today’s technology the suspects could be working from anywhere in the world and are very skillful in hiding their true identity and location. If you are unsure, always make independent contact with the agency the suspects claim to be calling from and confirm the information you are provided.

Regional police find the Friday Fugitive program to have been very successful - want to roll it out across the region.

Crime 100By Pepper Parr

BURLINGTON, ON

When Detective Constable Calvin Bulbrook to an idea into Superintendent Al Albano’s office at the Burlington division of the Halton Regional police he wasn’t at all sure if his boss would go for it nor was he certain it would actually work – he just thought it was worth a shot.

His Friday Fugitive has worked wonderfully well – so well that people who have warrants for their arrest outstanding are turning themselves in rather than waiting to be caught.

There are more than 170 people the police would love to put handcuffs on – they just have to find them first.

These are the Fugitive Friday individuals captured/located to date:

Of the 22 people the Regional police went looking for there are nine that they have yet to find. That is an impressive record – so impressive that Det/Cst Bulbrook expects the program will be rolled out in Milton and Oakville in the not too distant future.

Of note in many of the offences listed was that almost all of those wanted skipped bail. The police arrest them, the Crown Prosecutor puts a case before a judge – and the judges seem to be quite ready to release the accused on bail. The accused fail to appear and the police have to go looking for them – again.
Det/Cst Bulbrook, like many police officers, look askance at the revolving door and wonder if there isn’t a better way to manage the problem.

Keeping the offenders in custody is expensive but releasing them on bail and then then having these men and woman not show up damages the criminal justice system in the eyes of the public – and that isn’t healthy for any society.

Failing to appear when given bail is a problem that needs a solution.

Now into its 20th week - the Fugitive Friday program has proven to be a significant success.

BURLINGTON, ON

In April the Halton Regional Police Burlington Offender Management unit launched the Fugitive Friday initiative.

It was designed as an opportunity for the Halton Regional Police to share the identity of wanted persons with the public in an attempt to bring attention to individuals who may be living and hiding in our communities.

Every Friday since that time, a news release and accompanying photo has been issued to the media identifying a wanted person or wanted pair for offences in which they have evaded police or failed to attend court. Each weekly fugitive has also been promoted on Twitter and Facebook.

The Fugitive Friday initiative has been a great success. To date, six out of 12 featured persons have been arrested, in large part due to pressure from relatives of wanted people, friends and/or the community as a whole to turn themselves in to police.

The Gazette is preparing a more detailed report on how the Burlington division of the Regional police have made the Fugitive Friday program work and plans for its future development.

The police continually investigate and search for individuals who evade the law and the Fugitive Friday information sharing initiative has proved successful due to the teamwork and partnerships with our local media and our communities. We all have a role to play in keeping our communities safe and the extra eyes and ears are always a big help.
