On January 25th 2018, shortly before 2:30 AM, Halton Regional Police and Burlington Fire Department responded to a fire call at a Tim Horton’s located at 601 Brant Street in Burlington.
The fire which originated in an exterior garbage can was extinguished but not before causing damage to the front of the building and smoke damage inside, estimated at $250,000.
 The investigation revealed that at approximately 1:47 AM, two suspects attended the front of the Tim Horton’s which was closed at the time. One of the suspects (suspect #2) was observed on video surveillance tampering with the garbage can briefly before both continued to walk away. Within minutes, a large volume of smoke could be seen coming out of the same garbage bin and continued to burn and spread until eventually it was noticed by a passerby who then called 911.

 One of two suspects. Suspect 1: wearing black hooded coat (hood pulled up obscuring features) light blue jeans, dark coloured shoes
Suspect 2: male, white, black coat, light blue jeans, short dark hair, dark coloured shoes, walking with cane in left hand.

BURLINGTON, ON
Between December 2017 and January 4th 2018, cash and property was stolen from the residents of a home in the City of Burlington. The accused was the live-in care provider for one of the elderly residents.
The accused is Charmain Bibiana PETER (55 years old) from Saint Lucia.
Charged with; Theft Over $5000, three counts of Theft Under $5000, Possession of property obtained by crime and Uttering threats.
The accused was arrested and some of the property was recovered.
Police are advising Halton residents to ensure that they conduct screening process for hiring Live-in care providers and care providers entering their home. If you hire them privately; ensure they are entitled to work in Canada with a Social Insurance number, conduct reference checks, and ask questions about their qualifications for the services they are going to be providing.
Another method to ensure your safety and that you receive the professional care you are contracting for is to hire a registered and licenced Personal Support Worker. (PSW).

On January 4th 2018, between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM six cars had their windows smashed and items stolen from them while parked at Mapleview Mall at 900 Maple Avenue in Burlington. Items stolen included electronics, clothing, purses and wallets with credit cards which were fraudulently used. Police also received reports of two vehicles stolen from the area of Fairview Street and Drury Lane in Burlington.
Investigators identified a red Chevrolet Trailblazer stolen from Puslinch Township as being involved and that vehicle was located in the area of the two vehicle thefts in Burlington.
One of the stolen vehicles, a Ford F-150 was recovered in Brantford days later and was found to contain stolen property from the Mapleview Mall thefts as well as several that occurred in the City of Hamilton.
On January 16th 2018, members of the Burlington Criminal Investigations Bureau arrested Michel Blair Martin MCNAUGHTON (29-yrs) of Brantford. MCNAUGHTON was remanded into custody charged with the following offences:
• Theft of motor vehicle (2 counts)
• Theft under $5000 (6 counts)
• Mischief under $5000 (7 counts)
• Fraudulent use of credit cards (3 counts)
• Possession of property obtained by crime under $5000
• Possession of break-in instruments
• Fail to comply with probation (2 counts)
Police are reminding the public of the following prevention tips:
• Ensure your unattended vehicle(s) are kept locked/secure
• Never leave personal identification or valuables in your vehicle
• Park in a well-lit and attended areas whenever possible
• Never leave spare keys in your vehicle
• If you have to leave valuables in your vehicle, lock them in your trunk. Don’t tempt thieves by leaving packages or purses in plain view or on the seat.
• Remove garage door openers, GPS navigation and cell phone devices & power cords from view when not in your vehicle
• Consider installing CCTV / Surveillance cameras which can capture the crime and aid in suspect identification
• Ensure their homes and garages are locked when absent from the home or turning in for the night.
• REPORT SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY TO POLICE IMMEDIATELY

On January 18th, 2018 at 2:45pm, Halton Regional Police Service was called to a fail to remain collision which occurred in Burlington. The male suspect then carjacked a dark grey 2005 Acura ATL 4-door sedan with Ontario marker; BBJL781, from an elderly female.
The vehicle was then involved in a short pursuit with police resulting in the suspect colliding with a police cruiser. If members of the public observed this incident, police are still looking for witnesses.
 Stolen vehicle This stolen vehicle has yet to be recovered and police are asking for the public’s assistance if vehicle is observed.
The male suspect has been identified as: Terry Lurch STROME (41 years old of Dundas). (See attached photo of suspect)
 Terry Strome wanted by police – is known to be violent and to resist arrest. He is wanted for several criminal offences including robbery, flight police, dangerous driving and criminal negligence among others. The last known location of the vehicle was entering the 407 westbound at Highway 400 at 7:14pm on January 18, 2018. STROME has a history of violence and known to flee from police.
If a member of the public has knowledge regarding the whereabouts of Terry STROME; they are encouraged to contact police. Personal safety is the #1 priority, please call police and do not approach suspect.

On January 18th 2018 at approximately 2:40pm, a collision occurred at King Road and Plains Road in the City of Burlington.
 Photo of a male suspected of stealing a car from a woman while she was pumping gas into her car. Police photo. The male driver of one of the vehicles fled the collision scene. He ran to a nearby gas station and stole a vehicle from an elderly female who was pumping gas. The female was not injured. The male made good his escape in the stolen vehicle eastbound on Plains Road. Police are seeking the public’s assistance to identify the male.

A motor vehicle was stolen on January 10th 2018.
The Halton Regional Police are investigating a motor vehicle theft that occurred on January 10th 2018.
 Suspect in the theft of an auto from Best Western Hotel 2404 Queensway Drive, Burlington. The unknown male suspect, in the attached photo, stole the victim’s vehicle while it was left running and unattended in the parking lot of the Best Western Hotel situated at 2404 Queensway Drive in the City of Burlington.
The vehicle has since been recovered in the City of Hamilton and police are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the person responsible for this crime.
The quality of the image is much better than most photographs supplied by the police. This person should be identified quickly.

Volunteers, local media outlets and various businesses that help fund Crime Stoppers of Halton will be recognized at an open house to mark January 2018 as Crime Stoppers Month.
This year is also of special significance since Crime Stoppers of Halton is celebrating 30 years of success.
“Crime Stoppers of Halton has earned the respect of residents in the region through the efforts of the program to help Halton Regional Police solve crime and keep our neighborhoods safe and secure,” said Cal Millar, chair of Crime Stoppers of Halton.
“However, this is not something we could do alone. We have had the help of numerous volunteers, an extremely supportive media and the generous assistance of area businesses and organizations who have made donations to allow Crime Stoppers to operate in the region for three decades,” Millar said.
“The support of everyone has been nothing short of amazing.”
 FileBank, a paper shredding operation, has been a consistent supporter of Crime Stoppers in the Region. Like other Crime Stoppers programs across Canada (and many of the 1,700 units in 32 countries worldwide), Crime Stoppers of Halton has observed Crime Stoppers Month which was first proclaimed in 1986 at the annual Crime Stoppers International conference in Edmonton, Alberta. Crime Stoppers Month gives the opportunity to recognize those who have played a key role in assisting the crime solving program.
This year Crime Stoppers of Halton has added to the theme – See something? Hear something? Say something? – which it adopted in January 2016 from the popular Homeland Security slogan in the United States. However, they have changed – Say something to – Know something? – and have included a call to action by adding – Contact Crime Stoppers – to the message.
The theme is designed to encourage people to contact Crime Stoppers by calling, texting or through a web tip if they become aware of any information that will assist police to solve or stop crime.
 Detective Constable Jodi Thomson is the Halton Police liaison officer with Crime Stoppers. Through the years, anonymous callers to Halton’s program have provided tips that have led to the solving of homicides, break-ins, assaults, sexual attacks, robberies, frauds and numerous other crimes in Burlington, Milton, Oakville and Halton Hills.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is among a number of world leaders and political figures who have signed proclamations or sent letters encouraging people to support Crime Stoppers.
“The many events being held across the country this month offer a wonderful opportunity to bring awareness to the Crime Stoppers program, which encourages Canadians to report suspicious or criminal activity anonymously,” the Prime Minister’s letter states. “I am certain that participants will leave with a better understanding of the challenges facing law enforcement agencies, and will appreciate receiving information on how they can help assure safety in their communities.”
An Open House and Theme Launch, that will be hosted between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. by Crime Stoppers of Halton on January 22 at the Halton Regional Centre, will include remarks from Deputy Police Chief Carol Crowe; Ingrid Hann, a member of the Halton Police Services Board, Jan Westcott, vice-chair of Halton Crime Stoppers and Detective Constable Jodi Richmond, police coordinator of Crime Stoppers of Halton.
There will also be a cheque presentation by Rocco Neglia, a vice-president at Economical Insurance which has contributed $100,000 over the years to Crime Stoppers of Halton and an estimated $500,000 to various Crime Stoppers programs across Canada to promote the crime solving program and create awareness of crime concerns to high school students.
It’s also noteworthy that Economical Insurance is recognized as the Youth Initiatives Sponsor at Crime Stoppers of Halton.
 Burlington banks worked with Crime Stoppers and the Regional police to alert the public about the threat of Identity Theft John Sawyer, president of the Oakville Chamber of Commerce, will also speak at the Open House event to outline the value of Crime Stoppers to the business community and how the program can work together with company owners to combat crimes that impact firms large and small.
The four Chamber of Commerce groups in Halton were instrumental in bringing Crime Stoppers to the region in 1988 after programs were established in a number of other Ontario communities, including Hamilton and Toronto.
Detective Constable Richmond said although Halton Region is considered one of the safest areas in Canada, crime can still occur and anyone can be a victim.
 “Whenever there is a crime, it is important to have Crime Stoppers taking calls from anonymous tipsters to ensure cases are solved,” she said. “It’s also vital to have the media working closely with Crime Stoppers to alert the public whenever investigators need help to solve a crime.”
Richmond said Crime Stoppers is a true partnership operating with the public, the media and the police to ensure cases are solved.

It was a very relieved Regional Police Chief who sent a letter electronically to everyone in the Region – thanking them for the help given to avert the death of a senior who was out in the freezing weather without winter clothing.
 Margaret McCormick found in a wooded area some distance from her senior’s residence. Margaret McCormick was reported missing at 2:30 yesterday. The alarm went out and the frantic effort to find the woman before she froze to death began.
The police knew what they were up against and they pushed every button they had available to them. Evening was approaching – the police knew there was no time to spare. Things tightened up in the communications section where everyone was an edge – waiting for that critical telephone call. It came – well let the Chief thank everyone.
Chief Tanner, in his open letter said: “As experience has shown us, whenever someone vulnerable goes missing in the community, every minute counts.
“On the afternoon of January 4, a 78-year-old woman wandered away from her senior’s residence in Burlington. Without a winter coat, physically frail, unfamiliar with the area, and with temperatures plummeting to record lows, it was a race against time to locate this resident and bring her home safely.
“Halton Regional Police Service put out an immediate call to action, and the community responded in an emphatic way:
 Regional Police Chief Stephen Tanner “Our local and regional media partners worked swiftly to assist us in circulating key details to the public;
“The public leveraged their full social media potential to extend the reach of the missing person alert; and
“Local first responder partners (including Burlington Fire and Halton EMS) coordinated resources quickly and seamlessly in extremely challenging and exigent conditions.
“Four hours after she first went missing, acting on a tip from CN Railway personnel, the elderly woman was located in a wooded area, conscious, but suffering from cold-related injuries due to exposure to the harsh elements. She is currently recovering in hospital.
“We are strongest when we work together. Last night’s incredible outcome would not have been possible without the support and contributions of our entire community — the public at large, members of the media, and all first responder agencies.
“I thank you, on behalf of the entire Service, for your continued support of our efforts to preserve and enhance community safety and well-being in Halton Region. We could not do what we do without you.
“Together, we truly are one team.”

It looks like some Halton Region drivers are going to continue their Impaired Driving beyond the holiday season.
Offences Summary within Halton Region
On Friday, December 29, 2017, just after 8:30pm, a traffic stop was initiated near Grapehill Avenue and Strathcona Drive in Burlington. As a result of an investigation, Charalampos Kaltsidis (56) of Burlington was charged with fail or refuse to provide sample and driving while ability impaired.
 On Saturday, December 30, 2017, just after 4:30pm, Halton Police officers investigated a collision on Tremaine Road in Milton. As a result of this investigation, police charged Scott Lovelace (51) of Moffat with driving while ability impaired and driving over 80 mgs.
On Saturday, December 30, 2017, just after 8:00pm, Halton Police officers investigated a collision near Brenda Crescent and Queensway Drive in Burlington. As a result of this investigation, police charged Frances Bowles (52) of Burlington with fail or refuse to provide sample and driving while ability impaired.
On Saturday, December 30, 2017, just before 11:30pm, a traffic stop was initiated near Atkinson Drive and Upper Middle Road in Burlington. As a result of an investigation, Jean Melanson (43) of Burlington was charged with driving over 80mgs.
On Sunday, December 31, 2017, just after 12:30pm, a traffic stop was initiated on Lakeshore Road near Locust Street in Burlington. As a result of an investigation, Brian Costello (73) of Burlington was charged with driving over 80mgs.
On Sunday, December 31, 2017, just after 9:00pm, Halton Police officers investigated a collision near Jenn Avenue and Harbottle Road in Burlington. As a result of this investigation, police charged Adam Stewart (34) of Milton with driving while ability impaired.
On Monday, January 1, 2018, just before 3:20am, Halton Police officers were conducting a R.I.D.E. initiative at Bronte Street South and Louis St. Laurent in Milton when a driver evaded the check. Police initiated a traffic stop a short distance away. As a result of this investigation, Peter Antony (49) of Thornhill was charged with driving over 80mgs.
On Monday, January 1, 2018, just before 4:00am, Halton Police officers investigated a collision near Regional Road 25 and Number 5 Sideroad in Halton Hills. Police charged Muhammed Siddiqui (24) of Scarborough with driving while ability impaired and driving over 80mgs.
On Monday, January 1, 2018, just before 8:00pm, Halton Police officers investigated a collision near North Service Road and Third Line in Oakville. Police charged Milan Necak (64) of Oakville with driving while ability impaired and driving over 80mgs.

On Thursday, December 21, 2017, just before 10:30pm, a traffic stop was initiated at Longmoor Drive and New Street in Burlington. As a result of an investigation, Owen Brown (31) of Burlington was charged with driving over 80mgs.
On Thursday, December 21, 2017, just after 10:50pm, a traffic stop was initiated at Mainway and Appleby Line in Burlington. As a result of an investigation, Erblin Shehu (29) of Stoney Creek was charged with driving over 80mgs.
On Thursday, December 21, 2017, just after 11:20pm, a traffic stop was initiated at Walkers Line and Mainway in Burlington. As a result of an investigation, Panayiotis Diakoloukas (40) of Burlington was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and driving over 80mgs.

How you get nabbed for driving while under the influence before noon is not easy to explain away.
On Wednesday December 20, 2017, just after 11:00am, Halton Police officers investigated a collision involving an impaired driver in the area of Brant Street and Ontario Street in Burlington. Police charged Charles Beszterczey (66) of Burlington with driving over 80mgs.
On Wednesday December 20, 2017, just before 9:00 pm, a traffic stop was initiated at Plains Road East and White Oak Drive in Burlington. As a result of an investigation, Klaas Kreuze (50) of Flamborough was charged with driving over 80mgs.

BURLINGTON, ON
The 2001 Audio Video located at 3350 Fairview St, Burlington was robbed just before closing at 9:00 pm.,last night.
Two males entered the store armed with handguns and ordered the two employees to the rear of the store. One suspect maintained observation on the employees while the other suspect loaded an undisclosed amount of televisions into a large enclosed truck (which is believed to be a Uhaul truck that was parked at the rear of the store. The suspects fled the scene shortly after in the truck. It is unknown if a third suspect was waiting in the truck.
Two handguns were observed in the commission of the robbery, however, no one was injured.
The suspects were described as being black males in their early to mid 20’s, between 5’10” and 6’1″ with medium builds.

The Halton Regional Police Service is currently investigating a series of unauthorized entries into commercial establishments occurring at First Choice Hair Cutters and restaurants throughout Burlington and Hamilton.
The entries began in September of 2017 and have continued into December of 2017. Halton Regional Police along with Hamilton Police service are currently trying to identify the above suspect.

The Regional police had to deal with multiple complaints of theft of purses and wallets at supermarkets in both Burlington and Oakville. The police were looking for two individuals for several thefts that have occurred in Oakville and Burlington. The thieves’ worke3d in pairs stealing from unattended shopping carts.
 They watch the person they are going to steal from carefully and then move in quickly – snatch the purse or wallet and they are gone in a flash. There was a theft early in November at the Whole Foods store in Oakville ; another on November, 26, 2017, where the same two suspects were videoed at the Metro grocery store, Oakville. During this incident, the suspects stole the victim’s purse while she left her shopping cart unattended. The suspects quickly fled the store after committing the theft.
On November 27, 2017, the suspects attended the Food Basics grocery store, located at 3365 Fairview Street, Burlington. During this incident, the suspects stole the victim’s purse as she attended a cooler to select a carton of milk. Once again, the suspects fled the store immediately after the theft.
Police have received 16 reports of such thefts since the beginning of November 2017 where persons targeted were senior citizens whose purses and/or wallets were stolen from their shopping carts while the owner was not looking.
Investigators have been working with area Loss Prevention Officers to identify the persons responsible and were able to positively identify several suspects.
 Captured on video – three are arrested.
On December 16th 2017, two persons were arrested in Mississauga and another arrested the following day when police executed a search warrant at an apartment on Hurontario Street in Mississauga. The following persons have been arrested and held for bail:
Barbara GRABOWKSA (45 yrs) of Mississauga
• Theft under $5000 (Nine Counts)
Mariusz ZELINSKI (44 yrs) of Mississauga
• Theft under $5000 (five counts)
• Obstruct peace officer
Beata PARCZEWSKA (37 yrs) of Mississauga
• Theft under $5000 (three counts)
The Regional police officers have very solid relationships with supermarket loss prevention officers xxx Hanson said “We are committed to continuing to work with LPO’s to identify and apprehend offenders – thieves should take note before deciding to steal in Halton Region”
 Residents should be aware of their surroundings and be alert for distraction type thefts when shopping in the grocery stores, malls and other retail business.

On Saturday October 28th, 2017 the TD Canada Trust bank located at 500 Guelph Line in Burlington was robbed.
The person responsible for the robbery was identified as Jeffrey George GORSLINE (38 yrs) of No Fixed Address (Formerly of Nova Scotia)
During the robbery the suspect gave the teller a note demanding cash and indicated he had a weapon. The teller gave the bank robber an undisclosed amount of cash who then fled the bank and was last observed running westbound on Eileen Drive.
Investigators learned that GORSLINE was also wanted in connection with a Niagara Falls Bank of Montreal robbery that occurred several hours earlier on the same morning as the Burlington robbery. He was also wanted for three October bank robberies in Eastern Canada.
On October 30th 2017, GORSLINE was arrested on Federal parole warrant by uniformed officers from the Dryden Detachment of the O.P.P. and incarcerated at the Kenora Jail.
GORSLINE was eventually transferred to Maplehurst Correctional Complex and on December 1st 2017, he appeared in Milton Court charged with one count of robbery. GORSLINE was remanded into custody and will appear next for a bail hearing in Milton Court on December 18th 2017.

The Police Services Board met in Burlington in November, which is a first for some time.
Ward 1 Councillor Rick Craven who represents Burlington on that Board would have been the host.
During the meeting there may have been an update on the new police headquarters that are seriously behind the original production schedule.
 New police HQ – this is the view from the QEW. They were to be opened in the before the end of the year – it now looks as if the new building, located in Oakville a short five minute walk from the Regional offices on Bronte Road.
 This will be the public entrance to the new police HQ Police work is now much more than a police officer walking a beat. You might see a police officer on bike from time to time but policing today is done from the seat of a cruiser that is loaded with technology.
What’s in the cruiser has to be backed up by staff who keep the systems operational. The police haven’t put out much in the way of information yet.
The police are currently in the north end of the Regional offices. That space will be used by the Region for personnel who are currently located in rented space elsewhere in the Halton.
All there is for the public to see is the building which sits on a prominent site. It has a different look.

BURLINGTON, ON
Members of the Halton Police Fraud Unit while investigating a fraud commonly known as a “Lottery Scam” a type of advanced fee scam, intercepted two packages destined for an undisclosed location in Burlington. The packages contained a large quantity of cash that had been sent by two separate victims to the scam.
An advance fee scam is when a victim is instructed to send money in order to claim a substantially larger sum of money and the money sent is often alleged to pay taxes or administration fees before the larger sum can be released. The money is usually requested to be sent in some form of electronic payment but in this case the victims were requested to courier cash payments.
The combined amount of money recovered was $40,000.00 dollars in Canadian Cash and the fraud unit are investigating to identify the victims and return the funds.
There are going to be some very embarrassed people answering the door when the police call to return the funds.
Police would like to remind the public not to send cash or electronic transfers of money to anyone who has solicited these funds under promise of a bigger return of money. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Center is an excellent resource for the public to assist them in identifying many of the common scams and provides advice on how to avoid them.

BURLINGTON, ON
On December 10th 2017 at approximately 3:10 PM, several citizens notified police about a man who was observed breaking into cars at a townhouse complex at 2239 Walkers Line in Burlington.
Police quickly located the man riding a bike along Cleaver Avenue. He was arrested and found to be in possession of 8 grams of marihuana, along with property stolen from cars which included iHome speakers, cigarettes, hat and a pair of shoes. Police conducted further investigation into the bike the man was riding which turned out to have been freshly stolen from a shed at a residence on Heidi Crescent.
The man, identified as Charles Russell MCBEATH (18 yrs) of Burlington was released on bail and will appear in Milton Court on January 17th 2018 charged with the following offences:
• Theft under $5000
• Break, enter & theft
• Possession of a controlled substance (marihuana)
• Fail to comply with undertaking
Detective Sergeant Ron Hansen commented that “we (police) are appreciative of help from the public who are seeing suspicious activity happen and calling us right away”

On Saturday, December 9, 2017, after 3:30am, witnesses reported a suspected impaired driver in the area of Woodland Avenue and Victoria Avenue in the city of Burlington. Adam Smith (35) of Burlington was charged with care or control while impaired and care or control over 80mgs.
On Sunday, December 10, 2017, after 12:00am, witnesses reported a suspected impaired driver in the area of the Aldershot GO Station in Burlington. Jennifer Doucet (38) of Hamilton was charged with driving over 80mgs.
On Sunday, December 10, 2017, before 11:00pm, a traffic stop was initiated near Upper Middle Road and Guelph Line in Burlington. As a result of an investigation, Joseph Morris (45) of Burlington was charged with driving over 80mgs.
The Halton Regional Police Service remains committed to road safety through prevention, education and enforcement initiatives.
Members of the public are reminded that driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol is a crime in progress and to call 9-1-1 immediately to report a suspected impaired driver.

BURLINGTON, ON
Earlier in the month, Friday December 1st 2017, between 2:30 AM and 4:30 AM, numerous unlocked vehicles were entered and property stolen on Maryvale Court in Burlington.
Property stolen included loose change, GPS devices, debit/credit cards, sunglasses, headphones, CD’s and cigarettes.
 Officers from the Burlington Criminal Investigations Bureau identified Wayne Erik MILLAR (20 yrs) of Burlington as the person responsible.
MILLAR was arrested on December 10th and held for bail charged with seven counts of theft under $5000.00.
Detective Sergeant Ron Hansen commented that “these types of occurrences are preventable if citizens would take appropriate steps to secure their belongings and lock their car doors”
Police are reminding the public of the following prevention tips:
• Ensure your unattended vehicle(s) are kept locked/secure
• Never leave personal identification or valuables in your vehicle
• Park in a well-lit and attended areas whenever possible
• Never leave spare keys in your vehicle
• If you have to leave valuables in your vehicle, lock them in your trunk. Don’t tempt thieves by leaving packages or purses in plain view or on the seat.
• Remove garage door openers, GPS navigation and cell phone devices & power cords from view when not in your vehicle
• Consider installing CCTV / Surveillance cameras which can capture the crime and aid in suspect identification
• ensure their homes and garages are locked when absent from the home or turning in for the night.
